How do you guys use twitter?

Do you get every tweet that you're following sent to your phone? (even wilw?)
Only DM's and replies? I was doing only DM's and replies but at work I run snitter, so I turned that off. I love the idea of being connected to everyone, but I'm not sure if I'm "doing it wrong".

I've been curious about this too. I only get text messages for DMs, but might step that up to include replies also. I follow too many people to make getting every message sent to my phone be anything less than annoying.

In special situations, I can see myself turning it on more widely. For example, at PAX this fall I can see getting the updates from people there being pretty useful for coordinating and gathering. Same thing at the conference I'm going to for work this summer, since I know a lot of people there on twitter too.

Right now, I don't get anything sent to my phone and I have it hooked up to my gtalk. I may also be "doing it wrong".

I point and laugh at it. And then make rude remarks about it behind its back.

You do that with everything.

Do not!

*sneaks off around the corner mumbling to himself*

I <3 you guyz so much!

I occasionally check my feed reader. I can't even imagine having all that sent to my phone. I'd be paying through the nose. I don't get enough direct messages for it to be useful.

good point, i'd run out of my allotted monthly text messages in about two days...

I pay 5 bucks a month for 1000 of 'em. Did that so I can send pics to Flickr (not that I really do, I keep forgetting that I can)

what carrier are you with? $5 a month is what I pay, but I only get 200 messages.

I've been hearing a lot about this Twitter thing, but I think I'll be a luddite and just say no..

If you turn on updates from people you are following, (I think you have to do it on the website, its the only way I've found), then you get a text message any time they tweet.

I have unlimited texts, so its no biggie to me.

I also told it to turn off from 10pm to 7am so I'm not getting crap all night.

I could pay another 5 bucks and get unlimited, but I have 1000 a month anyway now.

I would think that EVERY tweet from my following list would get REALLY annoying after a while though. If I'm out and I have a minute, I'll check m.twitter.com on my phone, that seems pretty quick and easy.

You don't have to turn on updates to your phone from everyone. I just turn on the people I want to see.

unlimited texts is fine, but twitter will only send out 250 sms per week, so it's not the best to keep it on all the time. if you think you'll get more than 250 tweets in a week :)

I turn it on when I'm not at my computer. which is less often than I am (not including over night). :)

I don't follow many people at all.

Mostly just the ARG crowd that I'm close to.

I was getting them all (well, everyone I really cared about) to my phone, but it just gets overwhelming. Currently I don't get anything to my phone, and just turned on IM reception. I shoudl look into getting something like snitter.

But then, I have an iPhone, so I can just check mobile.twitter.com for updates if I'm interested - it's just not pushed.

I have been just using the betwittered google app on my goggle home page, that way its with all the other distractions I put on there.

I have most of the people that I follow turned on, but I think when I see an ARG announcement I might turn it off ...gets a little overwhelming.
30th-Apr-2008 07:06 pm (UTC)
Haha, when I seen ARG announcements, I turn more device updates ON. :P

I have it set up where, if I'm logged into Gmail/GTalk, all my Twitter updates go to GTalk - so when I'm at work, I have Gmail/Gtalk up and get my tweets there. Once I leave for the day, I sign off Gmail/Gtalk and the tweets automatically get routed to the cell phone. I have unlimited text messages so it doesn't bother me much - although the spouse things all my Twitterfriends have no life since he hears the updates come in on the phone all the time :D

I first started using Twitter to follow Ariadne and some other amnesiacs for The Lost Ring ARG. Very shortly after that I think most of us here on LJ started using it also and that's when I almost had a breakdown from information overload. However I've finally reconciled with myself that I simply cannot keep up to date with it.

Since I have a work-supplied BlackBerry with unlimited data that I installed Gmail and GTalk on, I have device updates sent to my IM account which hits me there. I am also just seeing the RSS button on my home screen... maybe I'll try adding my twitter page to my already monstrously long RSS list and see how that works.

As a day to day site for keeping up with people, I don't feel it is the best solution. But when you are mobile and/or at some event where you need coordination with other people is where it really shines. I was sending Ariock tweets for the DK clues on Monday, and except for the char limit, it worked well I think. I expect it to have a role at PAX as well.

I worked pretty hard to have SMS turned off on my phone's plan. Because it's a ridiculous service.

I have considered having it send things to IM, but really, I'd rather Adium just added support.
