costuming fun
13th-Oct-2008 01:31 pm
steampunk with abby
Apparently, I have the costuming bug. I've known for a while, Halloween was always a favorite time of year, and I loved coming up with elaborate costumes and filling in all sorts of cool detail. Turns out that la_ardillita is a bit of costuming hobbyist herself. Between conventions and Renaissance faires, I think we're going to have a lot of fun.

Here we are yesterday at the Carolina Renaissance Festival, in our finery.

And at Dragon*con, showing our "steamy" er side.

Wow!
I've lost about 10 pounds since Dragon*con, these pics really show it.

Those are awesome costumes! Did you make both of them, or did you rent the RenFest faire?

We own renn faire outfits, they were both custom made by the same lady on the internet. The boots and hats and other accessories were picked up here and there or made. Abby has a pretty good stock built up already (my hat, shirt, and sword were already in her collection, I made the arm bracers myself)

The steampunk outfits were cobbled together out of our own clothes, some thrift store shopping, and some bits from the costume shop (the top hat and goggles). The gun is a Nerf Maverick that I painted to look brass.

The boots were a good investment, they're simple enough that they work for both outfits.

I'd love to start putting together similar outfits - I'm just worried about the eventual cost and relative lack of use. However, I doubt I'll have much problem convincing ironekilz to help out, thankfully ;)

Dude, you're dating a cosplayer, you HAVE to dress up now. You're just going to wear street clothes at a convention when she's all manga'd up?

Touche. Although I was horribly out of costume at FarieCon this weekend.

but yes, in the future I'm hoping to get into some costuming. I've actually been thinking about trying to do a NiteOwl (Watchmen) Costume for D*Con next year.

Cornelius J. Huffnagle in the flesh! Amazing!
13th-Oct-2008 06:44 pm (UTC)
Indeed sir! Bully!
13th-Oct-2008 06:37 pm (UTC)
wow. her dress is gorgeous. I mean, you look handsome and all, but she's definitely stealing the show :)
13th-Oct-2008 06:44 pm (UTC)
She really does, doesn't she!
We had to stop many times yesterday for her picture to be taken.
13th-Oct-2008 06:59 pm (UTC)
Holy crap CJ, she's bloody gorgeous! Both of her costumes are amazing. How did you guys meet (or did you tell us, and I'm so out of it that I didn't read it)? More pictures! Oh, and of course you scrub up rather well kind sir.
13th-Oct-2008 07:37 pm (UTC)
She really is!
We met at the UU church; she was checking it out and I just happened to be there that Sunday morning.
13th-Oct-2008 07:46 pm (UTC)
That is really very cool!

Looking good! INCyr, his mom, and I are headed to the Md Renaissance festival this coming weekend. We're planning on renting costumes for the day since we don't own any. Hopefully we'll look as well-attired as you guys. :)
13th-Oct-2008 07:37 pm (UTC)
Have fun!
13th-Oct-2008 07:22 pm (UTC)
Oh, you both look so lovely!! Excellent. :)

I miss being able to hang out with you somewhat easily! Dressing up can be so fun.
13th-Oct-2008 07:38 pm (UTC)
Thank you!
I miss that too :(
13th-Oct-2008 07:33 pm (UTC)
these are seriously awesome!

I wish I had the skill to put stuff like this together. I recently ordered a pair of welding goggles for a Dr. Horrible halloween costume (still need to find the labcoat), but that's about as elaborate as I've gotten :)
13th-Oct-2008 07:36 pm (UTC)
I'm doing a mad scientist too! (generic though, not Dr. Horrible)
There's a scrubs store at the mall, you can get a standard white lab coat for about 20 bucks, but I have no idea where to get one like his. (some people have suggested a chef's coat)
13th-Oct-2008 07:38 pm (UTC)
oh, good call on a chef's coat - that might work!

The closest I've seen is this costume:
http://www.amazon.com/Scientist-Adult-Halloween-Costume-X-Large/dp/B000ZD8AK4/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1223926614&sr=8-13

But it's not quite right - I'd have to sew on an extra row of buttons on the side - and it's probably pretty cheaply made.

The problem is that the labcoat they used while filming was actually a custom made prop left over from Firefly, so there aren't exactly a ton like it out there :)
13th-Oct-2008 07:40 pm (UTC)
er, never mind the buttons bit - I misremembered what the real Dr H outfit looks like. But it'd still need some modifications.
13th-Oct-2008 10:36 pm (UTC)
Go to any nearby university with a medical program and they're bound to have lab coats.
13th-Oct-2008 08:53 pm (UTC)
Love the Renn outfits-Abby really goes all out-she looks better than some of the actors in the PA fair. See you in 4 days!!!!!

Awwww!
